Engine Knock 2005 Dodge Neon SE
Recently my Neon has been acting up. Since the check engine light was on I took it in to get a diagnostic. They said they needed to replace the knock sensor and camshaft sensor and it will all cost me $397. I’m trying to take the cheapest route here but my uncle who can install the parts is two hours away and while I may be able to make the time for the trip, I worry that the distance will be detrimental to the car. Any help?

Knock sensors do exist. You can either pay for the fix, have your uncle come to you, or find a friend with decent mechanical skills to replace them for you. IIRC I dont think the camshaft sensor is an easy fix, but its been quite a few years sense I messed with one of those.
If the knock sensor is bad you can fill up with the highest octane fuel you can find and take it easy with the trip. If the cam sensor was totally busted the car would not start at all or run very rough. You might be able to make the trip but make a few rest stops every half hour or so to give the engine a rest. You will be taking a risk though, so don’t kill me if the car dies. The cheapest way would be to let Uncle do it, but if the engine overheats and warps the head or blows the gasket you will be spending another thousand to get it fixed.
Good luck!
