First off, I’m assuming the car is not running when you do this and its a rear wheel drive car. Either way when the car is in the air and in neutral the driveshaft WILL NOT SPIN. The only way the driveshaft turns if you actually turn the rear wheels by hand then the driveshaft will turn but it is not engaged in the transmission. Thats why it is called a neutral gear, its free rolling.
One huge mistake tow truck drivers make with rear wheel drive cars is putting the car in neutral and towing the car from the front and leaving the rear wheels on the ground. This is ok for a very short distance. If you tow at high speeds what can happen with older cars the driveshaft will start turning from centrifical force. The driveshaft starts turning while the engine is off and turns inside the transmission blowing the seals.
yes it will
Yes, it’s connected to the diff all the time, it disconnects itself from engine engagement when in neutral.
no and if it did it wouldnt have any torque behind it but if you would move one of your rear wheels the shaft would move as long as you spin the wheel inless theres somthing wrong with your transmission
Yes it will but this is normal. The clutches in your transmission are dissengaged but they are still very close together so they will have just enough contact to make the shaft spin but with no force. You can easily stop the shaft simply by holding it with your hands but be careful in trying this.It is not an indication of a problem.
