Driveshaft Noise After Rear Lifting
Posted in Axles & Driveshaft | Asked on Aug 28, 2010I recently lifted my jeep cherokee laredo 1989 4×4 in the rear, but after this i have a noise from the rear driveshaft, the noise its like cracking, but it doesnt appears constantly, sometimes it disappears. how do i solve it?
well i added a leaf in the rear. when i drove back to my place i noticed the noise. i was planning to put on new coil springs too, i bought them a little larger than the stock and will use some coil spacers. i will get them installed in a couple of days.

Sounds like bad U joints
Whenever you lift a vehicle you change the driveline angles. The driveline angle is a precise calculation, so any change to it will cause U-joints to wear at an accelerated rate. If you replace the U-joints they will just wear quickly again. The proper thing to do is find a company nearby or even an internet site that can equip you with proper U-joints for the different articulation and angle of your driveshaft.
Another problem is that by what you’ve said you only lifted it in the rear …. What we don’t know is what kind of lift are you talking about , body lift , suspension lift , or what … How high and why only the rear…. When lifting any type of 4×4 you should be doing both the front and the rear evenly… Until we know a little more we’re just guessing ….

Slip yoke eliminator
You changed the drive line angle
Check the u-joints
Shim the rear axle with a 1.5 degree shim (little aluminum piece)
You need to put spacers in between the crossmember and the frame. The angle shifted on the driveshaft.
The exact same thing happened to me when I put a 3 inch lift on mine.
My best friend made spacers for me. Quadratec.com sells the spacer kit for I think about $40. You do need to get it taken care of.
You can even join the Yahoo XJlist group and the guys will tell you the same thing. They all go off roading and have had the same experience.
