My Air Conditioner Cools Intermittently On My Dodge Neon. It Will Cool Fine Upon Start Then Stop Soon After.
Posted in Air Conditioning | Asked on Feb 1, 2012It started last summer when we had 100+ temperatures. The car will cool for about 5 minutes and then it just starts blowing outside air.
The car came dangerously near overheating several times and I had to put on the heater to get the temp down.
Sometimes it will then spontaneosly kick in again and blow cool air again. Especially on a hill. It seems to blow cool air fine until the outside temp gets above 70 or so.
I took it to Dobbs and they evacuated the system, tested for leaks and performance, ran a dye check, replaced the thermostat and o ring, performed an antifreeze transfusion, and replaced the AC block valve. After $380, the problem persists. Dobbs said it was the compressor. I do not want to waste more money. Why didn’t they detect this before all the money was spent?
What could it be? Would be the cost to fix.

I would have guessed the compressor to that sucks they didnt check that first they should have done a thurough inspection on it they should be able to check this by how many amps it is pulling. I recently took some classes on home ac units and they are not that different. These things can be checked without replacing the compressor first so I would satrt by going somewhere that can check it to make shure its bad. But that does seem like the only logical option left . I would complain to the place you brought you car and ask them why this wasnt checked sooner.
I would make sure your electric fan comes on with the ac… It should turn on when the compressor engages. If not, that it where I would start……..
