How Much Does It Cost To Fix A AC Compressor In A 03 Ford Taurus
Posted in Air Conditioning | Asked on Jan 22, 2012I took my car to Mr. Transmission in Columbus, GA and he told me that my car needs a new AC Compressor, and new dryers, and that i had a leak in 2 of my pressure lines. He told me that it would cost me about $1694.00 to fix. Its winter time here and i haven’t been running my AC unit, he told me that when I turn the heat on the AC Compressor comes on with it. I originally took it in because of a noise I heard in the car when I turned the heat on. Someone please help me, Im lost and I really don’t know much about cars, and keep in mind Im a women…lol, thanks for your help in advance

When in the Defrost mode your A/C does kick in as it is attempting to condition
the air and remove some of the heavy moisture that cool winter air has… His
diagnostics sound correct, but I am not sure about pricing… you should get
another opinion for sure and ask them to show you the compressor and the
explain the issues with it, as well as the leaks… Last but not Least, when
taking your car to a Repair Shop, do NOT use the term “I am a woman”…
you are not expected to be a repairman so ASK questions and expect answers
but don’t play the coy card as it muddles up the repair due to a communitcations
gap…
Okay, here’s the deal in a nutshell.
The A/C runs anytime you have the defroster on to help remove the moisture from the air, or select A/C on the dash.
When ever it’s on, the compressor turns on.
“..I heard a noise” is pretty vague….
You could disable the compressor for the time being by removing the fuse, or relay for the compressor, but that doesn’t fix the problem.
$1700 is a reasonable price for a complete service parts and labor.
It’s difficult to argue his estimate without seeing the car.
I doubt he would quote you more than it needs as he doesn’t want to loose business.
Perhaps you should get another estimate from another shop?
Why are you at a transmission shop to repair your A/C? Shop around for a shop that does A/C even a small mechanic shop. I got my entire system replaced (aftermarket parts) for $650. I know California is higher.
