Ford Thunderbird How Much Oil Goes In AC
Posted in Air Conditioning | Asked on Feb 18, 2012We are installing a rebuilt compressor, new receiver/drier, flushing, how much oil goes in the system and WHERE? Compressor guy says it is dry. 1997 with 4.6l.
Are you going to tell me that every Autozone in the US sells parts every day that “break the law” Blaine?

It doesn’t take much, the compressor really doesn’t have a crankcase, the oil circulates around in the system. It is best to add it to the suction side of the compressor while it is on the bench, pour a little in and turn the compressor clutch and it will suck it right in. There should have been a tag inside the box the unit came in to tell you how much, I wouldn’t add more than a pint. This is if you have the oil in a jug. If you have the pressurized cans of oil charge then you can add it right after you pull the vacuum and it will suck it right in. Also, on the evaporator case, or on the blower case under the hood may be a tag which list the lbs of Freon and how much the oil chg. should be in oz.
R-UNuts…are you…well…nuts? 1 pint?!
If you are replacing the compressor with a new or reman unit there’s most likely a sheet that gives you some ballpark numbers. Usually 4oz or so in the compressor, a couple in the drier, etc. I would probably put a tad less in the system than is stated as there is already oil in the system.
You should not try to do this yourself. It is illegal unless you are 609 certified. Anything working with the Air conditioning system needs to be done by a technician who is 609 Certified. Go to a dealer or a certified garage. You could end up getting a big fine or worse.
Blaine’s answers suck, no doubt, but you really do need to head for a shop with this.
I doubt you are EPA certified and have the proper equipment to do this right or you would not be asking this question. The system MUST be vacuumed or any inkling of moisture will destroy what you have done.
Why? Compressors compress gases…liquids will wreck that dream really quickly.
