Do I Need To Replace The Whole AC Compressor 1989 Ford Probe

Posted in Air Conditioning | Asked on Jan 13, 2012
Below is the question about Do I Need To Replace The Whole AC Compressor 1989 Ford Probe,

I have a 1989 ford probe GL 2.2L. The belt snapped on it and I replace it. after I replace it I notice that the thing that suppose to be moving wasn’t moving on it. I then drove it for 3 min and the new Serpentine belt burned right off of it. I was told that the bearing could be gone on the AC compressor. Do I need to replace the AC Compressor Bearing or the whole AC compressor. Can someone please help me with this question. Where I live these mechanic are not trying to provide me with information.
The car was making a very loud Noise after my friend put the belt on. Then he check the tension on he said that the belt didn’t feel to tight. It had a little leverage

If you can replace the compressor.

First off, did you replace the belt yourself? The belt could ‘burn off’ if it was under too much tension and this can be caused by over-tightening or possibly a seized compressor bearing….HOWEVER, normally an AC compressor will simply failed to turn and not because it is seized – mine is gone now and the outer part of the compressor still turns, it just isn’t being engaged internally.

I would check the drive belt tensioner first. I suppose it is possible for the pulley on the compressor to seize but it’s uncommon. Check the tensioner to see that it has some movement and your other pulleys as well. Ask neighbours/friends to recommend a shop they trust.

By the way, a used compressor from a bone yard for my 2002 Focus is $125 CA, brand new is about $280 CA. Yours isn’t likely to be much more if at all.

They said the bearing could be gone. They’re good. What you have to do is when you have the belt off, check every part the serpentine belt goes around and check them for any noticeable difference. They should all turn freely, without any rubbing or sound. It could be one of the other pulleys that the belt goes around.
