Can I Just Cut Off The Belt That Runs The A/C Compressor To Stop The Loud Noise

Posted in Air Conditioning | Asked on Jan 31, 2012
Below is the question about Can I Just Cut Off The Belt That Runs The A/C Compressor To Stop The Loud Noise,

My car makes a LOUD noise when idling and I know it is something in the A/C system doing it. (clutch, compressor) It is a 1999 Nissan Sentra 5 speed and the motor dies when coming to a stop if I dont rev it up a little. I do not have the money to repair this and was just wondering if I could cut off the belt that runs the A/C system to stop this problem from happening. I can live without the ac but cant continue to drive the car in this condition thanks! If I left something out let me know but all help would be appreciated thanks
oh i was hoping it had its own belt solely for the ac. thanks for your help

Make sure to re-route the belt and get the exact belt size and yes you can.

Well, if the belt is a Serpentine belt, it is probably running other accessories on the Engine. Be careful not to disconnect other Accessories that are in-line with the A/C belt. If the belt is only running the A/C system, then it would be safe to cut it off. Although, I would suggest removing it properly, so that if you do decide to repair the A/C system you can reuse it.

That belt does more than just the ac, you could have a problem with your loaded idle.

Sure you can do that if the belt just runs the AC and nothing else.
