Can I Briefly Run My Motor With No Serpentine Belt

Posted in Air Conditioning | Asked on Jan 28, 2012

Not to drive the car at all. I just want to know if a noise the car is making is coming from that region or not while I happen to have the belt off anyway. it a 95 nissan altima. It actually has a a belt for the ac compressor and one for everything else and they are both off the car. Would only be for about a minute and its fairly cold out. I would think its ok but I wanted to check before I wrecked something. Thanks.

Shouldn’t be a problem. but no longer than a minute, also you will get a check engine light

After running the engine for up to one minute, shut the motor off and spin all the accessory pulleys by hand to see if one has a bearing problem.

The only thing that would happen is that you would slowly kill your battery’s power. Your alternator won’t be producing power, so hope that afterwards it has enough power to start up again. You won’t wreck anything by pulling off drive belts though.

What your probably hearing is a squeal? if so it will be the tell-tale sign of a bad idler pulley these should be replaced with every time a new belt is put on, being its a 17 year old car I doubt its been done lately.
