2000 Prelude: Does it have a fifth belt that drives a Balance Shaft
Posted in Engine & DriveTrain | Asked on Mar 26, 2010I recently had my Honda dealer replace the timing belt and all drive belts on my 2000 Prelude (non-SH model). Their estimate showed that they would replace 4 belts (HP14400-P13-014 “BELT 155YU24 A-555″, HP13405-PT0-004 “BELT”, HP38920-P0F-J01 “BELT, COMPRESSOR” and HP56992-PDE-E01 “BELT, P.S. PUMP”). But, I was charged for 5 belts, and two had the same part number (HP13405-PT0-004).
I thought they had accidentally entered the same belt twice. However, they said my Prelude has a fifth belt which turns a “balance shaft” and the belt wasn’t included on the estimate because only some Preludes have a balance shaft, and they don’t know whether a car has the shaft until they have the car in the shop. They did not review my invoice before giving me this explanation and I did not mention that two of the belts I was charged for had the same part number (which seems strange).
Is this a logical explanation for the extra belt, or should I question the dealer further?
Thanks,
Don

There is a Timing belt and a Balance shaft belt on that car. They should be different part numbers though.
Balance shaft belt 13405-PTO-004
Timing belt 14400-P13-004
All 2000 Preludes use the balance shaft. As far as I can tell there should only be four belts on your engine:
1) timing belt
2) balancer belt
3) alternator/air conditioning compressor belt (same belt drives both components)
4) power steering belt
there are no others. They obviously double-billed the one belt. I recommend you go back and get your refund for the duplicate invoice. If they insist that there are 5 belts, have them show you where they are!
hope that helps
