How Come When My 1998 Ford Taurus Stalls, It Tries To Start Itself Back Up

Posted on July 29, 2010

Whenever my Taurus stalls (ALWAYS while I’m driving), it seems that it starts back up. Also, when this happens, I lose my power steering and ABS. {BTW, when the power steering dies on it, there’s VERY little difference from when it “works”). I’m just curious as to the reason behind this. I’ve replaced all the wires/electrical components, new battery, oil changes every 2 months; has 135,000 miles, new fuel filters every 4 months, new spark plugs every year (as they keep dying out that quickly). I’m afraid that I’m stumped here.

    It’s a ford, that’s your answer!

your alternator could be the culprit as well. usually a place like autozone can test it for you for free as long as they aren’t busy….and if thats it it’s not crazy expensive to replace. My car acted similarly when my alternator was going bad…

Sounds like it’s losing power to the coil pack . I have a 96 Taurus that has this sort of trouble and haven’t found it yet . Could run ODBII tester on it like Davis Drive Right car chip that would tell you what is going on if it is losing power . Might check the CCRM next to the battery if you have it . Mine is worse it won’t start and cannot find short yet . It kills injectors after 3 second and has no power at coil pack . Good Luck

Power steering pump or rack may be what’s dragging your engine down(more likely the pump). Is the steering fluid full? Do you have a leak? Take it to a shop or change it yourself. Fuel filters should be good for a year.
