1997 the yr the first TJ.

The 95 Wrangler was a YJ and had leaf springs front & rear. I believe that the 96 was actually LATE in the year and was maybe considered a 97 but that was the first coil overs and TJ model.

the model you’re asking about (CJ) never had coil springs, anything prior to I believe 1995(it could be later) was leaf springs. TJs were the first Jeeps to have coil sprung suspension.
Now if you’ve seen a CJ-5 or CJ-7 with coil springs its because there are conversion kits out there to mount TJ suspension parts to the spring perches of the older Jeeps. But like I said its a modification. If you’re interested in that mod then shop around on line and do some research on who has done it, the pros, the cons, level of difficultly to do so. Try http://www.jeepforum.com/forum ^(http://www.carparts21.com/goto/http://www.jeepforum.com/forum) on there you can find people who have done build threads and see how it was done. then start shopping around http://www.4wd.com ^(http://www.carparts21.com/goto/http://www.4wd.com), http://www.acmejeepparts.com ^(http://www.carparts21.com/goto/http://www.acmejeepparts.com) places like that.

    Hope that answers your question.

mid year 96. Avoid this year. It had several issues. 97 and later are much better. Pre 96 are good, but they have the leaf springs in the front and don’t ride as well.

Well first off, CJ’s are not Wranglers. Wranglers were not made until 1987. CJ’s and YJ’s had leaf springs. Coil springs were not put on Wranglers until 1997 (there is no 1996 Wrangler, they were not made in 96). Any Jeep you see with coil springs that was made before 1997 did not originally have them.

    Curious nails it!

No CJ ever came with coils on the front. It’s a after market up grade.
