Is It Fair To Give $100 To A Guy For Doing My Brake Pads, Rotors And Shocks

Posted in Brake Discs & Pads | Asked on Sep 1, 2010

He works at autozone. Today after talking for awhile he said he’d fix my stuff for me (in his friends garage). I said really, is $100 ok.. won’t it take 5-6 hours? He said $100 is fine and it should only take 3-4 hours. The work is being done on a Ford Focus.

Is $100 okay, is that being generous or greedy? My uncle could do it for 100 so that’s what I offered him. He probably makes $7/hr at autozone.. or at least another guy I know makes that much there.
My uncle is 65 y/o.. so I kind of want to avoid him doing any hard work and hurt his back again.

That is a good deal if he does the job right, sounds like he may want a date too

Yeah that is fair . For both of you . He is going to get $25 hr tax free and you only spend $100 for $375 labor cost at a dealership (maybe more lol) .

    100.00 is a fair price.

Most Brake/Rotor combo jobs can be done in under 1 hour. 35.00-45.00.

Shocks should not take more than an hour either unless problems with bolts. 35.00-45.00

    So 100.00 is fair.

$100.00 is fair but a little cheap to me. then again i am a ase certified diesel mechanic and i charge a little more to people when i do side work. how bout this, if he gets it done quick and to your satisfaction maybe toss in another 20-25 dollars as a little appreciation bonus? that sounds ok to me.

Be VERY careful….he actually can get fired for offering to do side work at his job. and to be honest, i have worked for ‘zone and advance before (dealership now) and lets just say that most of the guys there arent the best mechanics. dont get me wrong, there are a few that work in the parts stores that know how a car works and can do just about anything automotive, but they are the exception to the rule.
if your uncle is competent let him do it, or find a private shop to do it. brakes are nothing to mess with if you have no clue. i refuse to let anyone but me do brake work on my vehicle or my familys vehicles.
and i do it for my family for free…no charges…so thats a bit odd for the uncle to want to charge….eeewwww.

Your getting a deal, being most places charge several hundred for parts and then about 60 bucks for labor , which it can take a few hours to do.

  7. Marksavoid says:

If the price includes the parts, this would be unfair to him, even if he gets wholesale. If the price is for labor only, I would have to say that this is a very fair deal, if he does good work.

  8. Foxfire says:

Thats fine unless you do it yourself . This way your both getting a good deal

  9. Carl says:

Really i couldn’t find someone at that price i would pay $150.00 or more for labor only.that is a deal.i would take him up on that if he is happy at that offer.i don’t think you are greedy at all besides you truthfully don’t know what that job is worth.

I think that this is a very reasonable deal! and since the guy works at the ‘ZONE, he probably knows what needs to be done, and he will do the job right or else he will be putting his rep on the line.

This is a very fair price. You’d have to pay at least $200 for comparable work at a shop. There’s always snags like rusty bolts on the shocks that will not come off and have to be cut off with a cutting torch.

He should bleed the brakes as well while he’s at it, front and rear.

    Good Luck!
