Is My Accessory Belt Too Tight
Posted in Hood Accessories | Asked on Aug 11, 2010So my dad changed the harmonic balancer on my 99 mitsubishi eclipse spyder 2.4l. When he was done, I took it to school, it drove normal. Today, my mom drove it and she said it kept cutting off on her. I thought maybe it was the battery terminal because it had done that to me once or twice. She was headed home and called me and said that it just shut off. So i went home and checked it, made sure the terminal was tight on the battery. But the battery was dead. So I gave it a jump start and I was going to pick up my brother from school. About 5 minutes of driving it, it started to act funny. It started to stall, but wouldnt shut off completely. If I turned my blinker on, the RPMs would go up and down. My radio turned off. I turned around and made it home. I left it running popped the hood, and noticed it was hotter than normal. I also noticed that one of the belts wasnt spinning as fast as I remembered it did. I turned the car off and tried to turn it back on but the battery was dead. Could it be that one of the belts is TOO tight thus causing it not to turn enough thus causing all these problems? i also noticed the SRS light also came on. What do you think?

There are One Answer for "Is My Accessory Belt Too Tight"
Best guess: I don’t think it would be that it’s too tight. If nothing else has changed except the balancer I would think that could affect how the car RUNS. Not the battery being suddenly dead. If your alt is fine I’d put the battery on a charger and later see if it drives ok for a while before trouble starts again. If you Dad ( or a garage) has one of those small diagnostic testers I’d try that for intermittent electrical issues but I’m not sure that’s what is going on.
